I'm glad Brandon wrote this book. I've watched Lucky Dog for the past two years and tried to incorporate (from watching) the common commands Brandon does on his show into training my dog. I would have loved to have had this book when I got the dog, but I'll use his techniques to reinforce the commands. I would recommend this book to every dog owner and especially first time fur baby owners. Having watched his show, I have great respect for Brandon's mission and his training methods.
It Works! We watch the television show, Lucky Dog, and have used some of the training tips with our dog. After reading the book, which provided much more information and background stories, we have made much-needed headway with our dog's out-of-control barking. I would be driven to distraction when the dog would bark at visitors or noises. Now, I understand that barking is in his DNA and I can stop him from barking, but he will always bark. It took an enormous weight off my shoulders; I am a responsible dog owner and can do what is best for the dog. The book is interesting and moves right along. Having watched most dog related TV shows, this book has taught me that I don't need the trainer in my house to do the training as I formerly believed . I can do it myself which is great for the dog and my ego as well!
I love the show and so I bought the book. The book has lots of stories about real dogs he's trained over the years and it goes into great detail about training methods. Gives a lot of options depending on whether you have a small dog or large dog, which is a plus and not something I'd seen in other dog training info. It is a lot of reading. It's not just a simple picture book with brief instructions. He goes into great detail, which is good, but it does require a lot of reading time to get thru.My biggest complaint is that most of his sollutions require the purchase of some kind of dog training equipment. Everything from a clicker, to a shake can, to a leading lure, to certain types of collars, harnesses and leashes. Frankly, I just want to train my puppy in basic commands and do away with a few annoying bad habits (jumping, and biting hands) I don't want to have to gear up like a professional dog trainer and buy a bunch of stuff that I won't need in a few weeks time. If I have to buy all this gear to properly train my dog, I will just enroll him for professional dog training and be done with it.So keep in mind, these techniques are good and will no doubt work, IF you have the time, the commitment and are willing to invest in training equipment.
I bought this book because my 14 week old golden retriever puppy was stressing me out! I had done a lot of researching online for training techniques and honestly, nothing was really working. So i researched books for training dogs and came across Lucky Dog Lessons. I had never seen the show before or heard of it. But decided to buy it based off the massive amounts of five star reviews. The book is in hardback right now, so was a little more pricier. But absolutely worth the price as it really does work. One major problem with my dog is not knowing the 'NO' command. I read this section on it and he gives step by step training for it. I practiced it with my dog, i'm literally on day one working on this, and it's already working. My dog is NOT chill and i was doubtful she'd be able to control herself. But it didnt take long for her to stop going for the treat immediately. She is learning it quick! Yes, i was skeptical at how simple the training step was... but it worked!! Can't wait to dig through the rest of the book and work on his other commands. My little girl and i are bonding more and more, thanks to this book. I just started his training this morning, 5/5/18, and i already feel less stressed out and angry.
I chose this book in the beginning because we have a six month old Yellow Lab named Stella. We are older and she is a bundle of energy. We were beginning to think that we were in over our heads and then we found Brandon McMillan and he taught us how to really enjoy her by training her to be a well-mannered puppy. It's been a lot of work , both on Stella's part and ours but Brandon made it so down to earth and easy to understand. His love for dogs is apparent on every page of this book. I loved this book!!
This book is well written, really easy to read and has a lot of great insight into different dogs' personalities and behavior. Unfortunately, I have not read the whole book, because my Husky took a special interest in it, before I had a chance to finish it. I will be getting a replacement, and hopefully I'll get to the chewing section in time :)
Excellent book!! I have read several dog / puppy training books in the last few months. This is by far one of my favorites! Brandon's Lucky Dog Lessons provides a new approach and insight to training your fur baby whether its a 5 pound lap dog to a 120 pound beast of slobber! Very well written and perfect for anyone, beginner or well experienced! The little inserted stories of dogs he has trained are a little treat for every reader!
This book is simple to follow and interesting. Currently using the techniques with our rescue puppy and it is working like a charm. The examples of the shelter dogs Brandon has worked with were relevant to the techniques shared. The writing style is specific yet humor is injected were appropriate. If you watch Lucky Dog and admire Brandon's easy-going style in training dogs, this book is for you. His tips on patience, tone, etc are extremely useful.
This is a really well written book. I love the rescue stories and the training that went along with the rescue. Would recommend to anyone who loves, but can't necessarily control their "fur babies".
