This book, sadly, is more opinion and fiction rather than fact. I wanted to summarize the first 12 pages of the introduction, just to give anyone interested in this book a taster of what they're in for.The introduction starts with the story of a child whose mother chose not to vaccinate based on the advice of her chiropractor, the child gets Hib, the doctor says he will die within minutes without a helicopter, and tells the mother not to cry or show any emotion as that may lead to the childs death too, the helicopter can't make it due to weather, the child survives anyway. Good story, message recieved. Mnookin then moves on to Wakefield and presents a highly skewed and incorrect version of the facts surrounding The Lancet paper, its contents and reason for retraction - the usual "Wakefield unethically falsified data to claim a direct link between autism and the MMR vaccine" story. Then, shortly after this, the story goes.. the CDC and AAP recommended the removal of mercury from childhood vaccines - the basis for the recommendation? To placate public concerns and keep parents happy and confident in the "Safe and Effective" rhetoric, rather than there being any science at all showing that injecting mercury into babies isn't necessarily 100% safe.Mnookin then moves to the subject of autism itself and says how it was once a source of shame for parents, but now it is an "all-encompassing obsession", that reserachers made no discoveries whatsoever regarding its causes or connections in 50 years, then goes on to say that the moment the CDC and AAP recommended mercury be removed, the parents of autistic children suddenly noticed that the symptoms of autism looked just like the symptoms of mercury poisoning and therefore jumped to the conclusion that the government knew and was trying to cover up that vaccines cause autism (or rather, the mercury does). That right there is Mnookin's story: The CDC and AAP benevolently recommended that a known neurotoxin be removed from vaccines out of the kindness of their hearts, to keep people from worrying, then parents of autistic children, being completely obsessive (instead of shamed as they once were) and lonely, drew a connection in their minds that their kids were suffering from mercury poisioning and that was how the vaccine-autism link was born! So that the parents of the kids wouldn't be shamed or lonely any more. Mind blowing - in a really bad way.Up to this point, we are still only 7 pages in.. Messaging contained in the following few pages: the internet is to blame; too much information for people who don't have the mental capacity to think properly; experts should be seen as the ultimate source of knowledge (over, the "wisdom of crowds" perhaps?); cash poor journalists will write anything just to earn a dime; parents of autistic kids are lonely, obbessive, resentful, bitter, angry and need a focal point for their guilt; compares parental concerns over vaccine saftey to concerns of the political implications of disposable diapers and other such things that self-satisfied, intellectually curious, prideful parents who drives Priuses and shop at Whole Foods concern themselves with. People concerned about vaccine saftey believe that the AAP is part of a widespread conspiracy directed against the nations children. Claims to have read hundreds of academic papers and thousands of pages of court transcripts - though doesn't say if those were papers or transcripts related to vaccines.. as if he actually had read related material, the content of this book could not be what it is, unless his reading comprehension skills are realllllly bad, which cannot be the case as he is a journalist by profession - right?Perhaps read for entertainment and to, perhaps, enjoy as a work of fiction, but not to gain an understanding of anything close to reality.
Mnookin's book provides a comprehensive look at the history of public vaccination campaigns in the US and abroad. His examination starts as far back as smallpox and moves into other more recent vaccines such as MMR and DPT. The book gives the reader some insight into how vaccine programs were mishandled in the past, leading to public outcry over the safety of the vaccines. It then connects these public oppositions to the greater public suspicion regarding the overall intention of government vaccine programs. Overall this book is very informative and even humorous at times. Mnookin presents both sides of the vaccination spectrum- those who are completely opposed and those who wholeheartedly support. He does a great job of explaining how certain groups of individuals could ignore current scientific data on vaccines in favor of listening to fringe doctors who appeal to their emotions. Autism research is discussed in great detail and there are several moving stories and families affected first hand by autism. I found Panic Virus to be very timely considering the news coverage given to relentless anti-vaccine groups in the U.S. For someone like myself who finds it difficult to deny scientific evidence, the book gave me insight into the tactics of anti-vaccine groups. I can now see how a parent desperately searching for answers as to how their child became suddenly autistic.
Kudos to Mnookin for writing an engaging and informative book on what could have otherwise been a dry topic. I read every footnote and was captivated by the accessible writing. Assiduously researched, the book is able to touch on a wide range of topics about how we got where we are on the issue of vaccines. I highly encourage anyone, especially those who feel some doubts about vaccines, to read this book. Interestingly, if you look at the negative reviews, you will not find any factual issues (people may say "he doesn't use facts" and then neglect to prove that)-- it is the refrain of the anti-vaxx folks by and large just repeating what they'd say to anyone who challenges them.
This is a work of fiction that reads like fiction. The cast of characters are captivating, if infuriatingly naive. I’m stunned by the breadth of this conspiracy. I highly recommend this one. It’s a,axing to see just how psychology, science, media, and emotions all play into our decisions. Great read.
